The bicycle trip around the world of a British couple ended in tragedy after both were killed by a truck in Thailand.

Peter Root and Mary Thompson, who were narrating their journey in an internet blog, lost their lives during an accident in a suburb east of Bankgok, informed Thailand police. The couple from Guernsey, who both were 34, left Great Britain and had traveled Europe, the Middle East, Central Asia and China.

The trip would a unique experience for the couple who met in an art school and saved money during 6 years while they were planning the route, said in an interview to Associated Press the father Peter, Jerry Root.

"Both were a source of inspiration", said Jerry Root. "Not only they talked about the trip but did it. I couldn't be more proud of them."

He added that both were experienced cyclists and knew the risks of long trips in bicycle. "Both camped naturally, as they said. My consolation is to think how happy they were. They were living the life they wanted. It was the happiest and most fruitful life," he said.

The couple posted photos and details of their trip on an website called t Two on Four Wheels. They had a lot of fans in Twitter and Facebook who were following the trip and indirectly enjoyed the couple's adventure, that included a trip to remote zones of Central Asia.

Police lieutenant colonel Supachai Luangsukcharoen, said Monday that investigators found the bodies, the bicycles and her belongings spread on a road, plus the crashed SUV among some trees. Supachai said that the driver, 25-year-old Worapong Sangkhawat, was seriously injured in the accident.

The driver said to police that he ran over the couple when he bent down to pick up a lid in the bottom of the vehicle. He was freed after posting bail and is facing charges of murder by dangerous driving which has a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.

Thailand authorities apologized for the accident: "We lament what happened and want to express our condolences to the families of the couple. The goverment will give all the assistance needed to recover the bodies", said Vachara Kannikar, a spokesman of the Secretary of Sport and Tourism on Monday.

Police said the bodies were taken to a rescue unit at Chachoengsao, 20 mlies east of Bangkok before they are repatriated.
