- This weekend takes place in Cuba the XII Spiritist World Congress Spiritist bringing together some 700 delegates from 34 countries worldwide. Spiritualism is not a religion but a way of approaching life, communicating with the dead. Those who profess it, reinforce spiritualism health, both physical and mental, and practice solidarity for charity. But what else do you know of spiritualism? We invite you to know a little more about it. Photo: AP
- Spiritualists believe in a supreme being, creator of the universe. They believe that the world is inhabited by spiritual entities, without flesh and blood, who can somehow affect the living beings that inhabit the world. Photo: AP
- Spiritualism does not have a visible leader in the world and for this reason, its practice may vary from country to country. The spiritualist movement was launched after the publication of five books written by Frenchman Allan Kardec, born in 1804 in Lyon. At age 50, Kardec became interested in the phenomenon of the movement of objects by spirits, who apparently communicated by saying 'yes' or 'no', through the movement of objects. These strange events occurred frequently in the United States and France. Photo: AP
- The first secretary of the International Spiritist Council, Frenchman Charles Kemph, said at a news conference that the purpose of spiritualism "is to improve society and the human being, and help each other unselfishly." Kemph stressed that this conclave will be held on the Caribbean island, where there are 574 spiritualist centers recognized by the government, and said that Cuba is the second country in the world after Brazil, with the largest number of these associations. - The conclave program will be developed through conferences and round tables and will discuss the works of French Allan Kardec, author of classic texts of the doctrine as "The Book of Spirits" (1864) and "The Book of Mediums" (1860). It will also address mental health and spiritism, neurophysiology, Spiritist philosophy and education, religion and spiritualism. Photo: AP
- Spiritualists meet regularly and sometimes conduct sessions led by a 'medium', a person who joins the group with the ability to carry out a communication with a deceased person. Photo: AP
- These sessions are not attended by outsiders to spiritualism. In Florida, a spiritualist lives in a small house in the 'Metaphysical' street, as shown in the photo. Photo: AP
- A well known spiritist was writer Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, author of the world famous book series, 'Sherlock Holmes'. Photo: AP
- Doyle lived during the first half of the last century and was a well known spiritist, to a point that he opened a museum in London dedicated to spiritism. Photo: AP
- It is not known exactly how many spiritists are in the world but it is estimated that it could hundreds of thousands, distributed in countries like Cuba, Brazil, Argentina and France. Photo: AP
- Spiritism gained attention when the movie 'Ghost' premiered in 1990, where actress Whoopi Golberg had the role of a medium that tries to communicate a woman with the love of her life, who was killed in a robbery. Photo: AP
