Kombo Kolombia had gained fame for playing vallenato in the area. They had played at various nightclubs including El Internacional, La Eternidad and El Sabino Gordo, which had been targeted by organized crime in the past.

The majority of the members of the band were Colombian. The group was formed of 12 group members and 8 staff members.

The group had been hired last week to give a concert in the state of Hidalgo, 24 miles from Monterrey in Northern Mexico.

As of now, 17 bodies have been found, 14 of them identified as members of the group according to the District Attorney of Nuevo Leon.

Sources from the municipal police told the paper El Universal that the group had been hired for a party of around 50 guests, but in reality it was a trap to assasinate them. They also said the ranch where the bodies were found belongs to a local drug dealer. The main cartels in Nuevo Leon are the Zetas and the Cartel del Golfo.

The authorities also said that some of the bodies showed signs of torture.

The paper, Reporte INdigo, reports that the possible suspects were members of the Sinaloa cartel, rivals of the local cartels, trying to win territory in Nuevo Leon.

"We'll have to see if there's anyhting behind it," said an administrator about the band's link with organized crime. "There is nothing firm that could lead to an investigation," said Jorge Domene, spokesperson for the state police.

According to wintesses at the seen, the group ended its performance around midnight. Shortly afterwards, 10 men arrived and took them.

Domene explained that "they finished them andnoria literally threw them in the mill, 15 meters deep and 70 centimeters wide." This made rescue difficult as the atuhorties had to extract water to recover the bodies.

The authorities delivered the bodies of Reyes Alejandro Mendoza Rodriguez, 25, and Mario Alberto Beltran Ortega, 24, Jose Antonio Villarreal, 39, singers for the group. They also found Heiner IVan Cuellar Perez, keyboard player, Jose Baudelio Santos Lopez, saxophone player and Victor Angel Santamaria Cruz, staff membre. This has been the worst massacre in Mexico since Enrique Pena Nieto became president on December 1, 2012 and the third worst in Nuevo Leon, where in August 2011, 52 people were killed at the Casino Royale.
